About Church
History
God is a God of wonders and miracles. St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Gujranwala Pakistan is one of them growing rapidly day by day. Although after a rift in the United Presbyterian Church of Pakistan in 1968, a congregation of very few families remained faithful with their mother Church - Presbyterian Church of North America who started worshipping in small places but as their number grew, they were allowed to worship in CTTC Chapel by Mr. K G Old, the then Principal CTTC. The number of members increased under the leadership of Rev. William John and it became one of the largest Presbyterian congregations in Pakistan.
Rev. William John visualized the congregation to have their own Church building. After due contacts and procedure, the Gujranwala Theological Seminary under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Arthur James Principal, Gujranwala Presbytery, Synod of the United Presbyterian Church of Pakistan and Presbyterian Church USA approval to build a Church building at the plot of 4 Kanals, 3 Marlas in South east corner of Gujranwala Theological Seminary through Rev. Richard Rowe (PC USA representative in Pakistan). But the process lapsed after the death of Rev. William John in 1991. The contact was restored in 1998 under the leadership of Rev. Eric John Saroya who took the charge of Pastor in 1993. The MOU was signed between the then Session Khokherki Presbyterian Church, Gujranwala, Gujranwala Theological Seminary, Presbyterian Church of Pakistan and PC USA in September 1999 duly signed by Mr. Tom Mc Cullah (Rep PCUSA), Rev. Dr. Arthur James (Moderator PCP & Principal GTS) and Rev. Eric John, Elder Mubarak Masih and Elder Inaq Azhar Sandhu (Rep Khokherki Presbyterian Church Gujranwala). The foundation stone was laid on December 2, 2001. This congregation existed with different names like 1st U P Church Gujranwala, Khokherki Presbyterian Church Gujranwala but on March 03, 2006 as the name proposed by Elder Raj Jiwan Mall, it is being called as St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Gujranwala. After the completion of the building, it was dedicated and consecrated on December 02, 2007. The regular services started on December 25, 2010. Rev. Eric John retired in 2012 where after Rev. Sabir Gul was installed as full time Pastor on March 24, 2013. The magnificent towers were erected in 2013. After the terrorist attack at Peshawar Army Public School in 2016 the local Government issued letter for severe security risks for the Church from the plot which is being used for parking area (about 04 Kanals on the south west of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Gujranwala, South east of GTS). The Church request GTS and PCUSA to lend this land to Church. It has been added as a part of this Church in 2018 after the due approval of GTS and PCUSA. The parking area has been well furnished by the installation of tough tiles and plantation of grass. The Martyn Hall was constructed in 2018 while the store room on the north- east of the Church was constructed in 2020 under the supervision of Elder Khalid Masih – Chairman construction committee. The Solar Pannels have been installed on July 13, 2024. The Church has become an Icon in Gujranwala. It is not only growing in number but also spiritually and playing a fatherly role for other churches in Gujranwala after the installation of a visionary Pastor Rev. Sabir Gul, who has a passion of preaching evangelizing, teaching and helping the needy around Pakistan. Many of the people have accepted Jesus as their Lord not only in Punjab but also in Sindh. To fulfill the spiritual and educational needs of the people in Sindh 04 schools have been opened in the suburban areas of Hyderabad Sindh.
